Originally developed by New Zealand educator and psychologist Marie M. Clay, Reading Recovery provides an alternative to traditional reading practices for educationally disadvantaged and learning-disabled students (Lyons, 1991). Reading Recovery is a school-based literacy programme for children aged 5 and 6 with reading difficulties. The intervention is targeted – pupils with the lowest literacy attainment scores and showing evidence of a lack of skills, knowledge and experience that means they cannot benefit from group and class teaching are selected for Reading Recovery after three to six terms in school. Reading Recovery in Canada is a successful early intervention program for children struggling to read and write. We know that children who struggle to read and write in their early education will continue to have challenges within the education system and on into adulthood.
